1995 Mercury Sable Stalling - Engine

Question: My 95 Sable has completely shut down on me three times in the past couple months. Twice happened when I was stopped at a red light or stop sign and tried to accelaterate again and the other time it was when I left my car in park idling while I got out and got the mail. The entire car seems to shut down in that the gas pedal goes down to the floor, the power steering failed, the power brakes failed ect. Really, the only thing that would work are the lights and radio. The check engine light does come on when it happens. The strange thing is that if I try to restart it immediatley is just chugs as if its not getting enough fuel and dies, but if I let it sit there for a couple hours it will chug a bit and then turn over correctly. I took it to a repair shop and they said they fixed some sort of idle guage or switch but it did not fix the problem at all. Any suggestions?

Technican: Hello, The best advice I can offer is that to fix a car the mechanic MUST verify the owner's complaint by duplicating the problem. If it cannot be duplicated then they are guessing what to do based on their experiences and what they know about the car's history. If you allow the mechanic the lattitude to guess and he is wrong you are agreeing to pay retail for work that might not fix the car. To determine if your car is getting enough fuel it would help to know what the fuel pressure is. Was it tested? Do you know if the car was road tested and the complaint duplicated? Do you know the maintenance history on this car? How long since a fuel filter was replaced? Fuel pressure is one thing but fuel flow volume can be restricted by a dirty filter. Have you had the car tested for diagnostic trouble codes recorded in memory? If the check engine light were on while driving a code would be a current code. The event you described while moving sounds like the engine has died and in that scenerio the check engine light would come on but no code will show to be current. However, there may be a "history" code recorded. Do you have recourse with the shop that did the work you described? If they didn't fix your car's problem they need to step up. What engine do you have, please?
Technican: Hello, May I have the courtesy of an update on the status of this question please?
Owner: I had it looked at a second time and its not the fuel pump, fuel filter or fuel pressure. They came out with no answer and sent me on my way... So I'm back at step 1 again. I'm thinking it could be the ignition module or some other thing like that.
Technican: I'm thinking Crankshaft Sensor.
