2003 Chev Cavalier Failing - Electrical & Lighting Systems
Question: Car no power, stopped running, battery dead.
So replaced with new battery, dead again. Took alternator off and replaced it, when I checked it on the car, was only putting out 12amps, off car on bench test 14amps. When replaced with another new (not rebuild) still only 12amps.
When testing with "the prob" from snap on, with power connected, inserted into plug on alternator when checking terminal in plug, witch created a power sorce, the alternator started putting out 14amps; unpluging the prob, bact to 12amps.
Why is this, and how can I fix the problem?

Technican: I had the same problem on my lincoln we had to run a jump wire from alt to a wire that became hot when key was turned on I changed7 alt through away 5 then found out they were all good hope this works for you don't cost anything to check. Technican: now that was an older lincoln check with a auto teck first don't want nothing to burn out Technican: you need to check and recheck your fuses first of all.
then clean and tighten the batt cables and wires, make sure there is no corrosion around connections.
finally inspect car for a short or something left on when the car is off
I hope this helps Technican: Your alternator seems good. You need to check if power is coming to the alternator on those 2 wires in the connector. The red wire is the "turn on" wire which gets power when the alternator is to be on. The grey wire should flash on and off as the need for voltage changes. Both wires are controlled by the computer. If no voltage is on either of these wires, you may have a computer problem, somewhat common on some cars that have this design. Is the "service engine soon" light on when the car is running? Owner: No, the service engine light is not on. Technican: Check or power coming to the alternator on those 2 wires when the engine is running. If no power, check each wire directly at the computer. If still no power, check the powers and grounds into the computer. If they are OK, replace the computer. Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
