1998 Chev Cavalier Won't Start - Electrical & Lighting Systems

Question: hello, need help, i just bought a new (reman) alternator and battery, it started and then just died, now it wont even click over, the battery is not getting any juice, someone told me it might be the fusible link from the alternator to the starter, is this true??? if so can you tell me where it is and if i can do it myself with out taking out the alternator, they said it was behind the alternator and i cant find it, there is a nut on the right side of the alternator that i think could be it but i cant fit a tool or my hand in there, i dont know what to do, please please help

Technican: Hello, The large wire with a nut on it at the back of the alternator is not a fusible link. It is the circuit over which the alternator charges the battery. Have you rechecked your battery installation? Did you pull the bolts out of the battery cable terminals to look for corrosion? Are the cables tight enough when installed that you cannot move (rotate) the cable connections? What engine do you have, please?

Owner: 2.4L twin cam, and yes the battery is new, all the cables are in great shape, I had a mechanic install the alternator and the battery so i know both are good, but he knows nothing when it comes to electrical.

Technican: OK, hang in there while I do some research. Is the car's electrical completely dead? No lights...Nothing?

Owner: correct, it is DEAD, nothing at all. Thank You

Technican: My mistake, The big red wire off the back of the alternator does have a section that is fusible link. The fusible link color is gray, it is fusible link "G" and bolts directly to the starter solenoid. Another large red wire runs from the battery positive cable connection (at the battery) to the starter solenoid. Since these two wires both bolt to the same terminal on the solenoid, this becomes the circuit path that the alternator uses to charge the battery. The second wire coming off the positive battery cable connection runs to a fusible link and relay center under the hood of the car. Find that black box and look at the fuses inside. They're BIG fuses. Those are the power distribution fusible links that power the car's systems. Check for blown fuses. Please advise.

Owner: done that already, all the fuses are good, so should i change the fusible link??

Technican: Do you have a test light or a meter to see if the fuses in the relay box have power on both terminals of each fuse with the key on? The fusible link "G" between the alternator and the starter should not be the problem. Have you checked the negative battery cable connection where it connects to the engine?
