1997 Chev Cavalier Slipping - Engine

Question: The car has been functioning fine until this problem. Daughter got in the car after work. Started fine, drove fine, until she was half-way up the hill to our home. Half-way point, engine totally lost power, and now idles extremely rough. It's almost like its not firing on all cylinders, or the engine is being straved for something. Just listening to the engine and exhaust, its like its just having difficulty staying running. I don't see anything visual, hoses, wiring, etc - that would indicate a problem. My intentions is to check for fouled plug, and to change the fuel filter for starters. I was wondering if there is a sensor, that could cause such drastic change in performance. There is a check engine light on, but have not checked the code yet. The vehicle is the z24, 2.4L, dohc, manual. no mods to the engine or anything. (75, 000 miles) Recent work about 3500 miles ago, new water pump. Probably about 200 miles on current gas. If I try and drive, the engine will not allow, seems it just won't go up to around 30 mph only. Thank you for your time.

Technican: If there is a problem with the fuel or fuel pressure the check engine light will not come on, so it sounds like your plugs or wires need to be changed.
Owner: I'm looking for more possibilities... I realize the check engine light will come on just from a cylinder mis-fire, due to the engine spuddering while loosing power. Your the expert, but where would you look beyond plug/plug wires. Just want a path to walk down, in case what you mentioned doesn't work. Most likely answer to my problem type answer, in most logic order. Again, definitely appreciate you help. Kyle
Owner: Hello!
Technican: Hello, Have you verified spark on all cylinders? You may have had a coil fail and are running on two cylinders. Can you swap coils and move the problem to the other cylinders? Has the car driven through rain and splashed water up under the car that may have wiring wet? I don't know of a sensor that would cause the symptom you describe to suddenly appear. I'd need the diagnostic code to narrow the path here. 200 miles on the current fuel..., can you get a sample and check for water? Is fuel pressure good? Fuel filter okay? Have you considered the timing may have slipped due to a worn timing belt? Does your Owner's Manual call for a new belt at about 60K miles? Thinking with you,
Owner: I'll check on what you mentioned. The vehicle has a chain vice belt. k
Technican: Thank you, I'll look for your message on what you've found.
Technican: I'm hoping for an update from you on your question's status. Please advise.
