Technican: Sounds like the torque converter clutch (lock up) solenoid is sticking. In which case the car will stall when coming to a stop, just as if you had a standard transmission and tried to stop without depressing the clutch. Owner: why wold the torque converter sol'n stick after a period of time, and why does it happen quickly after driving at speeds of 70 or more? Technican: Your description matches the usual failure pattern 100%.
It happens hot after extended driving at highway speeds. At highway speed the torque converter will stay locked (as opposed to locking and unlocking if you were stopping and starting). The longer it stays locked the more likely it is to stick and not unlock. Anytime you reach 70 it should be locked (by design), and may not unlock.
If the car shakes, chugs, jerky, etc when coming to a stop (as opposed to shutting off instantly as if you had turned off the key) this is a tell tale sign the converter is staying locked. Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
