1994 Chev Cavalier Malfunction - General

Question: Driving my 94 Cavalier, 40, 000 mile and in good condition, my engine bogged down while doing 55mph, returned to normal for 3 seconds and then died. The speedometer shot to 0mph although I was still coasting at 40mph, at least. Power steering and brakes were non-functional. Checked the ECM fuse for the computer and fuel injection, and it was blown. The ECM fuse blows every time I have tried starting the car with a new fuse in place. It blows within seconds. Does anybody have any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Technican: Use a test light in place of the fuse. It should glow because of the short. Unplug components of this circuit one by one and see what causes the light to go out (or dim noticably). On a guess start with the fuel injector harness. Inspect all wiring as best as you can. If a test light is unavailable and you continue to use fuses, use one with a lower amp rating (IE- use a 10 or 15 amp fuse in place of a 30 amp for test purposes). The reason for this is you don't want to keep getting getting the circuit hot during the time it takes the fuse to blow. Did you notice if the engine has to be cranking for the fuse to blow? Or would it blow by just turning the key to the on (run) position? Tip, sometimes you can find a shorting circuit while looking for a spark under the hood (just before the fuse blows). The darker the better. Be careful around moving engine parts.
Owner: Thanks for the info, and to answer your question, it does have to crank over for the fuse to blow. I was acctually able to get my car running for a second or two before it died on one attempt. What can i use for a test light or where can i get one? And will the looking for a spark in the dark method show a damaged wire?
Technican: Visit your local autoparts store and tell them what you plan to do. An experienced saleperson can set you up with inexpensive test equipment. As for looking for spark in the dark, it's simply a 'trick' that sometimes will find the offending circuit. Four eyes would be better than two. Which engine do you have?
