1994 Chev Cavalier Malfunction - Engine

Question: I have a 94 chevy cavalier with 186, 000 miles on it. It always starts fine and runs fine. I've been driving it for a about a year with the torque converter unplugged -- to fix the problem I had with stalling while coming to a stop. Now have a new problem, just started a few weeks ago. During deceleration from normal driving speeds, when the engine starts to slow down, it sounds like it is shutting off and a few seconds later starts back up again. So far it hasn't caused any problems, the car still runs fine and doesn't actually stall, but it seems rather unusual and I'm wondering if this is going to lead to something worse. Also, during stop and go driving, during deceleration, sometimes the car will shake a bit. Any ideas?

Technican: Which engine do you have? Does the rpm's slow enough so the charge indicator light and/or other dash warning lights turn on? Does the check engine light come on at anytime while the engine is running?
Owner: It's a 4 cylinder, 2.2 L engine. I never see any type of warning lights at all
Owner: A little more information. It seems to happen as I'm decelerating when I hit about 70 km/h. The engine suddenly gets real quiet. It sounds like it's shutting off, but I'm not completely sure. Then once the speed hits about 63 km/h, it revs back to life. From there on down it's seems ok.
Technican: You say it 'revs back to life', this may change things. How much does it rev, does it rev enough so that car starts actually moving faster? Please do this test safely, when decelerating and the engine seemingly stalls, press on the gas and let me know if the engine responds as normal. Have you checked for trouble codes stored in the computer? It wouldn't hurt to check, if you need instructions leave your email address and I'll send them.
Owner: once the car revs back again, it doesn't jerk the car or anything. It just seems like the transmission is confused or the car doesn't know how much gas to give. it doesn't sound like it's shifting incorrectly, it just seems to go silent between 70 and 63 then suddenly I can hear the engine again. you can email me at with the code instructions. Thanks for your time.
Owner: One more thing I tried tonight on my way home. While decelerating, I put the car in neutral. (It's an automatic). The engine got silent just as it seems to do between 70 and 63. Could it be slipping in to neutral?
Technican: Sorry for the delay. Email sent. It is possible but would be unusual.
Owner: Reply email sent. Sorry, but I couldn't get the codes to display. Also, to re-iterate, one of the other related things my car seems to be doing, is at very low speeds -- I notice mostly during stop and go driving -- I'll gain speed, simply from taking my foot off of the brake. Things get a bit shaky and sputtery while slowly gaining speed. Then when I brake and decelerate (if I haven't reached about 25 or 30 km/h), the car will seem like it's going to stall, but it never does. It sputters around and shakes, but always regulates itself once it goes back to idle. Never seems to have a problem that low. Strange thing though is that if I give it hard gas and it gets up to about 40 or 50, then have to brake, there is no hesitation and no sputtering during accel or decel. I'm baffled.
