1993 Chev Cavalier Malfunction - Chassis, Suspension & Steering

Question: ABS system having problems on 93 Cavalier RS 3.1L V6. Every now and then when braking the brakes will become soft and ABS will start to pulse, combined with grinding noise from engine compartment. Usually only happens at slow speeds during regular braking. The vehicle will slow but the braking distance increases much farther than is safe. ABS error codes being generated are 53, 55, and 66. ABS light comes on, but very rarely. Does this signal that the hydraulic assembly needs replacement, or maybe the electronic control module?

Technican: Your problem probably lies in one of the four wheel sensors for the ABS. There is a test. Unplug each of the wheel sensors. Spin the wheel segment rings and check for AC voltage at the sensors. You should have between 1 to 3 volts AC if the system is operating properly. Also check to see if you have a slightly loose wheel bearing that is allowing the segment ring to contact the wheel sensor I hope this helps
Owner: Thanks for the quick reply. I suspected the speed sensors early on and tested them, and they appear to be working correctly. However, the problem comes and goes so of course it could be that it just isn't happening when I am testing. My other thought leaning me away from the sensors was that when this does happen and the brakes start to slip it feels like all the wheels are slipping. If it was just one speed sensor I would expect the only valve to be releasing would be the one controlling the wheel(s) monitored by that speed sensor and that the other wheels would continue to brake as normal. I was hoping that the error codes would be better indicators of the problem, but I don't have any guide for the error codes and couldn't find one on the internet. Do the codes that are being generated match a speed sensor problem?
Technican: Yes there is a possibility that you have a bad sensor that is in and out at this time the codews you mention are not specific it could be a matter of a few componets and a process of elimination. Sounds like the brake calipers could also hanging up if that is the case. You will have to remove them and either replace or rebuild them.
Owner: You noted that the codes were not specific. Are they undesignated numbers that don't have a component associated with them? I'd like to know what each code is indicating to try and help me zero in on the problem. Thanks in advance!
Technican: No sir the codes will tellm a tech that there is a problem concerning the antitheft system and the tech will make a call on what part possibility is malfunctioning based on what the antitheft system is doing It will not point to a key or a ignition on broken wire in the steering colunm or computer module, although the code for all of these are the same combination of numbers and letters"
Technican: Code descriptions: Code 53 Right front channel in release mode too long. Code 55 Motor driver circuit. Code 66 Rear axle motor shorted to ground. With this information I recommend checking the powers and grounds to the ABS assembly. If OK, one or more of the 3 internal motors may be dying, which would match your system wide symptoms. Code 53 would point toward the control valving sticking (or sluggish motor). I would start checking ABS assembly prices!
