1992 Chev Cavalier Overheating - General
Question: the tempature gauge goes up to 220 and then drops back around 160 it did this three times then would stay up around 220, then the thermostat would stick.I replaced it twice, then a friend told me to drill a small hole in the thermostat. It stopped the gauge from going up and down but the heater dont work right.Have a cure or something to do for this? Thank You. jim

Technican: first off its a cavalier, and the cavalier 4 cylinder has MANY MANY MANY over heating problems, Second off, drilling a hole in thermostat is akin to putting a hole in your radiator, a dumb idea and you can slap your friend now, Jim.. OK that said, Cavaliers MUST have a completely sealed cooling system for the heat, ac and cooling system itself to work. Make sure that every thing in the system is clear, the water pump is working and GET a new thermostat. Check the neck of your radiator make sure its not out of round, and yes this is a common problem in the cheap radiators that Cavaliers have. and last? could be a head gasket or head crack, Cavaliers are an odd animal and will give you fits trying to figure out why things are going wrong. Start with radiator and go on, see if any leaks, plugs in coolant system, water pump, and yes water pump is a cheapo, can act up even if not really causing engine trouble. Hope this helps and apologize to your friend for the lump on his head for me will you? Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
