1992 Chev Cavalier Overheating - Engine
Question: My car over heats all the time .. I changed the radiator cap, thermostat, hoses, fan switch near the thermostat. It seems to boil the water and in goes into the overflow and then it won't come back into the radiator. No water is visable on the ground or white smoke coming from tail pipe. I'm at a losss as to what to try next. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you ... Al Kennedy

Technican: Hey Al, The cooling system must pressurize or the boiling point of coolant remains 212 degrees F. Your engine should run at 220-230.
If water/coolant gets to the overflow tank but can't get back to the radiator the radiator cap gets the blame in most cases. Does the upper radiator hose flatten after you turn the car off and it sets a few minutes? (Another sign the cap is the wrong type.)
Are the cooling fans operating properly? Do you have A/C? Which engine do you have? Have you considered/tried a compression test to see if there is a head gasket problem? Not all head gasket problems cause white tail pipe smoke until the failure worsens.
Can you pressurize the cooling system with a tester to see where pressure might escape? This gets critical near the radiator cap pressure rating, i.e. 14PSI or whatever is OEM specification. Can you test the cap the same way to see how well it holds the spec pressure printed on the cap? Even the heater core is involved here.
