1991 Chev Cavalier Stalling - Engine
Question: My 3.1L Engine shuts down after running @ 50 to 60 MPH for 10 to 15 minutes. Engine will then restart almost immediately, but would run on only two cyls. Continuous running in this condition eventually clears the problem for a short time.

Technican: Does it shutdown at any particular speed... like coming to a stop, etc?
Your car has three coils that each fire two cylinders. If you are only getting spark at two cylinders you either have two coils failing or the ignition module is not triggering all the coils. This assumes you have verified loss of spark. Technican: Does your check engine light come on when the problem is present?
If you want a more precise response please answer the questions. Technican: By the way the coil packs do fail with time and I have seen them shut down when hot. Owner: Yes "check engine" warning comes on. Technican: Whenever the check engine light comes on a troublecode is stored in the cars computer (actually an ECM or PCM). Your car is a 91 model year so you can (fairly easily) pull the code(s).
Highlight, edit, copy, and paste the following link into your address bar. It contains instructions for reading the troublecodes. It is part of a free online repair manual for you car, equivalent of a haynes or chilton repair manual.
