1991 Chev Cavalier Other - Engine
Question: For the past week, when I drive my car about 15 miles, it just completely dies in the middle of the road. It will not start, when I have it towed and it gets to the service station they can start it. They replaced the fuel pump, thinking that was it, but it wasn't. Everyone is baffled. Do you have any idea what it could be?

Technican: Would you please give an engine size, 4 cylinder or 6cyl? Technican: This problem is usually caused by the crank sensor or the ignition module failing. I would always check these parts first. Owner: It is a 4 cyl. There is no crank senor in the car. But is there any test you can run to find out if it is the ignition module? Technican: THere is no accurate way to check the ignition module without special equipment. Autoparts stores can test the ignition module off the car but this only will find a dead ig module. The reason this test will not work is because (if it is indeed this item) your ig module works after a cool-down period.
For now test these things-
1. Does the check engine light come when you first turn the key on (as it normally does) during the no start period. (I expect it does)
2. Test for spark to the spark plugs (preferably with a spark tester). Chances are you losing spark, let me know...
